Be honest with yourself, tot up your units, and stop apologising if you want to drink less in 2023 💬 Adrian Chiles shares his six-point guide to a drier January
Not long before Christmas one year, a very well-refreshed young woman approached me in a bar in Birmingham in the early hours of the morning to talk about drinking.“Don’t remember November!” she shouted triumphantly. OK, while this somewhat missed the point of the whole exercise, fair play to her; there was no answer to that.
The approach I took to moderate my drinking didn’t involve a period of abstinence. I just, well, moderated my drinking. There are practical tips galore – drink only alcohol-free for the first hour of a night out; if you’re drinking wine at a party, alternate water and wine in your glass; explore alcohol-free beers, spirits and wines; try to drink on fewer days of the week than you do drink, and so on.
I was drinking them mindlessly, out of sheer habit. This had to stop, and not just because a scan suggested I was damaging my liver. It was also just plain daft.It also helped no end when it dawned on me that it’s only really the first drink that matters. It’s the only the first drink that brings about a change in your emotional state. It makes you feel good. The second one may do this too, but less so.
Alcohol, ludicrously, is the only drug you seem to have to apologise for not taking. Stop apologising. Drink – or don’t drink – what suits you, and not what suits whoever you happen to be with. The Good Drinker: How I learned to love drinking less
