'He was a good lad, he deserves justice...'

It was a cold, January evening when a family was ripped apart. As tens of thousands of Manchester United fans swarmed out of Old Trafford following a Premier League game, just a short distance away, a young life was cruelly cut short.

A ‘fun’, ‘cheeky chappy’ who was the youngest of four children, who became yet another young victim of knife crime on Greater Manchester’s streets. Joan described her son Kennie as her ‘baby’. "I know he's not a baby but to me he's a baby, he's my youngest of four,” she said. Kennie and a number of the accused were in the area at the time, phone data showed. The following day they sought out retribution.

Kennie had been on the phone with his older brother, Sonnie. He had heard about the large group and tried to warn his sibling. But his claims of self-defence were later rejected. Thirlmere Avenue quickly became a scene of horror. Residents rushed out of their homes to try and save him. After hearing what he’d heard on the phone, Sonnie rushed into a car and began searching the streets for his little brother.

“It's not about grassing, a child has been murdered. He hasn't passed through an illness or something we've had chance to get used to. He was there one minute and he's been taken the next minute. It's just been sheer hell, it's been horrible." "You can imagine if it was your child, how heartbreaking it would be not to have your son there every day. It rips you apart. If anybody has just got the slightest bit of information, anything, even if you don't think it's anything, it might be a little missing piece that the police need. They need help, and we need somebody to come forward and do the right thing for Kennie. He was a good lad, he deserves justice.

The fact that this area of the law is controversial was acknowledged by the trial judge, Mr Justice Goose. On the first day of the trial, in the absence of the jury, the High Court judge noted that there has been ‘concern’ from some ‘who have legitimate interests in these things’, regarding cases ‘where large groups of people are prosecuted and it is said to be joint enterprise’.
