This Michigan team looks like the deepest and most talented of the Jim Harbaugh era. And the mission is clear — capture a national title. byAustinMeek examines how the Wolverines stack up against other national championship teams of the CFP era:

Though all of those teams were loaded with talent, simply adding up draft picks and five-star recruits doesn’t tell the whole story. The premise of this project was to focus on the 36 players who contributed the most to each national championship team’s success. The five-star quarterback holding a clipboard might be great someday, but he doesn’t factor into this calculation. Neither does the future first-round pick who plays a handful of snaps.

Using a point system, I measured recruiting rankings, experience and draft talent at each position for the nine national champions from the CFP era, plus Michigan’s projected rotation for 2023. A top-50 recruit in the 247Sports Composite counted for five points, descending to one point for a recruit ranked in the 400s. A first-round pick was worth five points; a player drafted in the 200s was worth one.

Though not exactly scientific, these results provided a rough profile of a national championship roster. They show how these teams were constructed, where the draft talent was concentrated and how many blue-chip recruits are needed at each position. Draft data is incomplete for the recent champions, and projecting Michigan’s future draft picks takes a lot of guesswork.
