Arctic conditions and low winds are thought to have prompted the tightest day for the GB electricity market since 2011

temporarily issued an urgent alert on Wednesday “to encourage market actions to increase system margins”, a notice for a great safety net between demand and supply – marking the first such warning of the winter to date.

Porter claimed at around 5.30pm, the spare electricity capacity on the national grid plummeted to just a few hundred megawatts, according to data platform Amira, meaning even a small power station trip could have triggered blackouts. Some commentators, however, argue the spare capacity was higher than what Porter calculated.

Households are due to experience another bitterly cold night on Friday, when the energy market will face equally challenging conditions, according to Watt Logic, with the expected load on the GB energy market forecast to mirror that of Wednesday. Meanwhile, as an apparent result of demand closing in on supply, British households were paying more than £2m an hour on Wednesday to some gas-fired power stations as grid operators were forced to pay well above-average sums to power plant owners.

Yellow weather warnings for ice have been issued for large parts of the UK – most of Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as large parts of the east of England, until 10am on Thursday.
