Christmas Eve can be a challenge for parents trying to get their kids to bed. Sleep expert Joanna Rammell offers some creative tips to help make bedtime more appealing for excited children.

Christmas Eve can be magical but chaotic for families with little ones. Excitement over Santa 's arrival is sky high, making it nearly impossible to get the kids to bed, let alone to sleep. But without a few hours of sleep, the big day could turn into a blur of exhaustion, tantrums, and unexpected naps. Plus, Santa can't make his entrance while they're awake.

Luckily, sleep expert Joanna Rammell, a certified sleep coach who works with babies and children up to the age of seven, has some creative ideas for helping get excitable kids to bed on 24 December. 1. Do a 'countdown dance' To encourage your child to get into bed and try to sleep on Christmas Eve, Joanna suggests doing a countdown throughout the day. ‘Spend the day making Christmas Eve bedtime positive, rather than a punishment,’ she says. ‘Countdown the hours throughout the day until everyone gets to go to sleep so Santa can deliver the presents. Have a little family dance on the hour, celebrating one hour closer to bedtime and Santa’s arrival.’ 2. Get Santa to write a ‘bedtime’ letter Joanna also suggests a letter from Santa could make the prospect of going to bed more appealing – although read this a few hours before their usual bedtime or the excitement could be too much. ‘Write a special letter from Santa and his elves reminding children of the importance of an early bedtime to make sure they get their presents,’ Joanna, who has teamed up with greetings card marketplace thortful to share Christmas tips, says. ‘Reading this earlier in the evening can motivate them to get to bed on time.’ 3. Make Santa’s special sleep potion The food kids eat before bed can help them get a restful night and Joanna is a fan of trytophan-rich foods. Trytophan is an amino acid that she says 'makes serotonin and then melatonin – a hormone that helps children's bodies know when it's time to sleep'. 'Create a special'sleep potion' together with lots of tryptophan rich foods,' she advise
