Apart from major events, Sydney’s Olympic Park is a ghost town. But there’s a plan to bring new life to the precinct.
Sydney Olympic Park has more than 5000 residents, as well as thousands of workers employed by companies and government agencies such as the NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Ambulance who are located in the precinct.Janie Barrett
Now the Minns Labor government has taken up the baton, with Planning Minister Paul Scully detailing the latest plan to turn Sydney Olympic Park into a vibrant high-density suburb at the Greater Parramatta and Olympic Park conference this month.Janie Barrett The state government established the Sydney Olympic Park Authority in 2001 to turn the precinct into an “active and vibrant” town centre that was developed according to the best environmental and planning standards. But attempts to create a thriving suburb have not worked.
“The scale of the blocks, streets and spaces were designed for major crowds and large venues, quite at odds with the needs and character of finer grain of city streets and neighbourhoods,” she says. The precinct is owned and operated by the NSW government through the Sydney Olympic Park Authority, making it easier to build more homes, including social and affordable dwellings.
Sydney Olympic Park is quiet at night unless there are major events, Develin says. “The parklands are busy on the weekends. It’s a vibrant place where families enjoy sporting activity, cycling pathways, picnicking and other forms of relaxation.” “The creation of a major green space and parklands [of similar standard as Centennial Park, albeit considerably larger] located at the demographic centre of Sydney is the Games’ major legacy and was a major promise of the bid,” he says.
