The President-Elect will soon try to bring the war to an end. Here's how he could do it
that, despite many observers’ scepticism about Trump’s confidence of a quick end to the conflict, there is potential for a deal that could not have been brokered by Joe Biden or Kamala Harris.
“The most important issue for us is security guarantees. Even more important than territorial ones – a very painful and difficult issue itself,” a Ukrainian defence official tellsTop of Ukraine’s wish list is Nato membership. However, Kyiv has become more pragmatic on this. Whenlast month, it demanded an “immediate invitation” to join Nato, leaving wiggle room.
But a deal that sells out Ukraine would mean that Britain has spent a lot of money and political capital only to have the rug pulled from under it by the US – supposedly the UK’s closest ally. The Ukrainian official says they expect a Trump-brokered deal to include “pushing Ukraine to accept Russian control over parts of Crimeaor the Donbas, framing it as a ‘pragmatic’ solution”.
According to the Institute for the Study of war, Russia controls a total of 110,649 square km in Ukraine. By contrast, Ukrainian initially seized around 1,171 square km in Kursk, and Russian forces have since recaptured nearly half of that territory. They say the “Geneva Conventions have shown that they are outdated and do not meet the criteria of today”. The official adds that they want to see Russia held “responsible for war crimes” and for Western allies to keep sanctions on Russia in place.
