Passengers arriving at UK airports are facing lengthy delays at the border as electronic passport gates across the country have broken down. The technical glitch is affecting all airports that use the automatic e-gate system.
“Our staff are working with UK Border Force – who operate passport control including the e-gates – to provide assistance to passengers where necessary.”
The e-gate breakdown is the latest IT issue to affect UK airports on what is expected to be one of the busiest weekends for travel since before the pandemic.after British Airways cancelled at least 172 flights due to the impact of an IT failure. The disruption, largely affecting short-haul routes to and from Heathrow Airport, resulted in 92 BA flights being cancelled on Thursday, followed by another 83 on Friday, affecting 20,000 passengers.
British Airways said the “technical issue” was resolved on Thursday night, but the disruption continued as planes and crew had been sent to the wrong locations.The Port of Dover posted on Twitter: “Thank you for your patience as we catch up from earlier IT issues at border control, which have been resolved. Traffic now processing well through border. Average waiting times for cars and coaches now 90 mins.
The RAC estimated that drivers across the UK will embark on 19.2 million leisure car trips between Friday and Monday making it the busiest late May bank holiday since 2019.
