The transfer window has closed with Liverpool having chosen not to sign a new defensive midfielder
It is a prime example of how quickly both perceptions and expectations can change in football. And for Liverpool supporters, it underlines concerns the summer transfer window has done precious little to allay.
The 19-year-old had impressed when breaking into the first team two seasons ago, with his performances in the second half of the campaign marking him out as a potential long-term successor to Liverpool's senior number six options. Then Reds manager Jurgen Klopp retained faith in Bajcetic throughout last season despite the injury setback that limited the Spaniard to just two appearances last September before a comeback in an cameo at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the penultimate home game that highlighted just how far off the pace the youngster remained after such a lengthy spell out.
In fairness, Slot spoke encouragingly of Bajcetic before his move. “I hope it will be a big year for him because he’s a very talented player because he’s been out for 15 months and I think he could become a very important player for us, only if he gets playing time now," said the Reds boss.Bajectic, though, won't be an option for Slot this season.
Of course, it's not as though Slot doesn't have depth available, and the head coach has offered some clarity regards various midfield roles. Dominik Szoboszlai and Harvey Elliott, for example, are vying for the 10 position.
