With an election looming, even Venezuela’s cradle of ‘Chávismo’ has turned against his successor Nicolás Maduro
“Cradle of the revolution!” cries a sun-bleached sign welcoming visitors to Sabaneta, a town on the Venezuelan plains that was the birthplace of Hugo Chávez. Yet for all the fawning memorials to the late populist president, Sabaneta has begun to turn. Even here, Venezuelans say his so-called Bolivarian Revolution — which combines a state-led economy with nationalism — has become a failure.
Locals who knew Chávez in his youth describe a rambunctious and incorrigible lad. For hours he would play chapita, a version of baseball played with a broom handle for a bat and bottle cap for a ball. “He would sulk when he struck out,” said Ramón Antonio Sánchez, 58, a teacher who migrated to Argentina but has since returned to care for his infirm mother.
