Environmental & Management Solutions (EMS), a Hull -based charity, is facing a difficult decision: to cease its subsidized meal program due to rising costs and dwindling funding. The Freedom Food Ready Meals project, which has provided approximately 57,000 meals over the past seven years, is set to end on March 31st. Funded primarily by the National Lottery and smaller grants since 2018, the program has become unsustainable in the face of increasing expenses.

Jan Boyd, EMS chief executive, expressed deep concern about the impact on vulnerable individuals. 'We have worked tirelessly over the last 18 months to secure longer-term funding to keep the project running,' she stated. 'Now – as awful as it sounds – without us, some people might not be able to afford to feed their children.' The program's closure will leave a significant gap in the community, particularly for those struggling with food insecurity. Weekly meals were provided to various community groups, including West Hull rugby club, which fed up to 160 people on Thursdays. Andy Rees, coordinator of the Freedom Food project, lamented the situation. 'The costs are growing and growing… it's just killed us,' he said. 'People will be going to bed and waking up hungry. When you're cold you can put another jumper on, but you can't function when you're hungry.'Julie, a volunteer at EMS who also relies on the meals to feed herself and her daughter, described the program as a 'godsend.' 'Food prices are just going up and up, and sometimes you just can't afford to eat – simple as that,' she shared. The impending closure highlights the growing challenge of food insecurity in the region, intensified by the rising cost of living. The lack of affordable nutritious meals will disproportionately affect low-income families and individuals already struggling to make ends meet. The community is grappling with the loss of a vital support system, raising concerns about the well-being and food security of vulnerable residents in the coming months
