EXCLUSIVE: The First Minister is expected to announce a consultation during his Programme for Government statement

Humza Yousaf will today announce a crackdown on single use vapes which could lead to a ban on their sale.

Yousaf is tipped to announce a consultation during his PfG address, effectively the Holyrood version of a King’s Speech. An environmental campaigner told the Record: "We are hoping for good news from the Scottish Government. We feel we have had a good hearing from ministers and officials, and are optimistic about what the day will bring."One said: “I think it is absolutely certain he will act. Everyone knows single use vapes are a scourge and have to be dealt with.

Yousaf paid tribute to the Record’s “excellent” campaign and said a ban would “probably” require legislation. He added: “You'd have to try to take the retailers with us. They're going to be the important partner in all of this, but if we can get to a position that says 'this is the damage that's been done to our environment, and to young people's health', and if we can present that in a way that I hope everybody would accept, then I think building that coalition again, with our retailers in particular, will be quite important.

The report added: “Both the environmental impacts and health issues for young people are of concern around SU-ecig use worldwide. A number of jurisdictions have already introduced, or are considering introducing, bans on sales, whilst some have banned only flavoured e-cigarettes.” Mackay said in June: “Disposable vapes create a huge amount of waste. You can see it on every high street in the country. They are bad for our environment and for our health.
