Public Affairs Officer Dr. Tonya Butler says 500 plates were distributed.
The American Legion Post 199 in Fairhope distributed hundreds of barbecue plates to service members and the community. The plates featured chicken or pulled pork, baked beans, and potato salad. She says today is the “super bowl of veterans” and this is what they love to do most.Butler, an army veteran herself, says everyday is a chance to honor vets but especially today to show how proud they are.
“Lots of times veterans will not identify themselves as veterans because the relationship to their service and trauma and things like that,” Butler explained. “So we want to tell them that we’re so proud of them.” One navy veteran, Buddy Woolridge, stopped by to grab his plate. Unfortunately they were already sold out.Which is why a table is always set up for the fallen.
“For many reasons. There are a lot of us that are vets that didn’t get to come home, and so it’s very important to me,” Wooldridge said. “I’m just really proud. Proud of my father who was a B-25 pilot. My uncle who won two silver stars in Korea so I thought he had it all cleaned up before I went over there. So I’m just thankful for them and everybody that has served before me and serves today.”
Butler says they also had the chance to feed the police department, first responders, and fire department Monday morning.“If you’re a veteran in our community anywhere here on the eastern shore and you feel like you are missing that camaraderie that we have when we’re on active duty we’re here for you. We want you to come and be a part of our organization Post 199,” she said.
