Demonstrators told the far-right there is no place for hate on the streets of Paisley – after turning out in their hundreds to counter a planned protest in the town.
A diverse crowd of around 200 people gathered in the car park from 5.30pm to pre-empt any action by the SDG – with asylum seekers in the hotel watching on and posting messages of thanks on the windows of the building. “People have been living here for years and there’s not been a single bit of trouble or bother. These thugs think they can come into our streets and threaten people because they perceive that they’re different. Celie Byrne, daughter of Paisley playwright and artist John Byrne, attended the counter-demonstration in support of those living in the hotel.
“Everybody is a person and deserves to live a life and have freedom regardless of where they are; and be able to do that without any fear.”
