Constituents in MP Andrew Gwynne's hometown Denton shared their shock and disappointment at his words, though some were less surprised
People from disgraced Labour MP Andrew Gwynne's hometown of Denton have shared their disgust and disbelief after it was revealed that he allegedly exchanged a series of racist and sexist remarks in a WhatsApp chat. The messages were published in the Mail on Sunday, and included one in which Mr Gwynne allegedly said he hoped an elderly constituent who had contacted him about bin collections would die before the next election.
But the apology may do little to win back the confidence of constituents in Gorton and Denton, some of whom told us that they had been left "shocked" and "let down" by the alleged behaviour. Others however, were less surprised by what emerged from the WhatsApp group, which is understood to contain a number of Labour councillors.
Mr McKenna shared that he had previously had a good opinion of Mr Gwynne, saying: "I had a problem once with Tameside. I dropped him a line, and I used to go away on weekends and we came home and it was repaired."People like that, you expect they're going to keep their nose clean, and I thought up until today he has done. Now, I don't know."
"In this day and age you have got to be so careful about you say and where you say it. We don't want people to be outstanding, we just want them to be normal." Elaine Heyes, 54, works for the NHS, and was not surprised by what emerged. She said: "I'm not really happy with what he's said about the Denton people. For him to say something like that about the children and the people of Denton, I think it's out of order, for an MP to say that.
