It started with my family, but now friends are on board too
We used to gift each other CDs, DVDs, pieces of clothing that were the wrong size and gift sets that would just go unused in our bedrooms about 80 per cent of an average monthly salary funding these festivities, why debts soar at this time of year and why financial concernIt started with my family. We used to gift each other CDs, DVDs, pieces of clothing that were the wrong size and gift sets that would just go unused in our bedrooms.
The solution became clear: cut out all gifting. This way, we save each other the hassle and stress of shopping, while no longer financially burdening each other. Now that my siblings and I are adults, we fully embrace the rule: no presents, even for birthdays. The agreement is simple – if we want something, we fork out for it ourselves. We take it so seriously that when I tried to give my mother some shoes recently, she immediately made me return them.. If someone really insists on the gesture, we tell them to bring a small box of chocolates or a baked dish instead.
I’ve also observed my friends take out payday loans to buy Christmas gifts, and struggled to pay it off months after. I’d be mortified to receive a gift from someone who couldn’t afford to buy it. The thought of their stress would overshadow any joy. It’s why I have instilled a no Christmas gift policy in my friendship group too.We do soften the rules on our birthdays – we cover each other’s meal as a treat, and when we travel, we exchange small trinkets like a postcard or magnet.
I prefer to prioritise a shared experience. My family and I enjoy a meal out or cook our favourite dishes at home. Those moments feel more special than exchanging gifts., it’s time to give ourselves permission to opt out of the gift-giving treadmill. Let’s focus on what truly matters: the people around us. Isn’t that what Christmas is really about?DENIS MACSHANE
