The exercise gap between Yusuf and her husband has, at times, affected their marriage. Yusuf admits to feeling that her husband’s choices are sometimes “selfish”. But she also believes that exercise could be the glue that helps to bring them closer together – as well as help her regain her sense of self.
Regular exercise actively helps to reduce those risks and it is important for their later life health. Although women on average live up to five years longer than men, they also spend more years in poor health, and regular exercise helps to prevent and manage the chronic conditions that lead to poor quality of life in retirement.“The reality is that women are dealing with a lot,” Dr Wall says.
Dolman, who works as a TV and film producer, finds herself prioritising family and household obligations over fitness. She has committed many times to improving her health and wellbeing by blocking out time for exercise, but feels she meets endless hurdles. As a result she struggles to find timeherself beyond walking her dogs and she worries that will not provide the cardiovascular workouts she needs to protect her health as she ages.She is aware that her husband has a different approach.
