Pia Sinha found 'rats and vermin everywhere' when she stepped inside the facility
The ex-Governor of HMP Liverpool has recounted the dire conditions in which 'feral' inmates were 'living like animals' at a time when the institution was dubbed 'Britain's worst prison'.
She continued, detailing the grim reality inside the prison: "And so I kind of felt that in amongst all of the sort of devastation of it, there was still like a beating heart in Liverpool prison. But the infrastructure was crumbling. It was filthy, it was literally no window was left intact, rats and vermin everywhere. I mean, it was like deeply shocking."
Taking charge of HMP Liverpool, once dubbed 'Britain's worst jail', became one of Ms Sinhas most significant career challenges. She began her tenure as governor in November 2017, although she admitted the choice to accept the position was not straightforward. Pia Sinha, the current Director of the Prison Reform Trust, praised the inclusive atmosphere in prisons and their absence of snobbery, stating on Desert Island Discs: "There isn't that kind of snobbery around prisoners, you know, and I kind of really like that and I knew I could work with that."
