Paul Thorpe's photos capture life in Greater Manchester between 1977 and 1986
A collection of old photographs of Oldham showcase its way of life as well as the changes taking place in the town.
The photographer told the M.E.N:"I suppose I’ve used a camera like a visual diary, and sometimes just go out looking for good images, and people just doing what they do! Even when going to events like carnivals, sports events etc. I am more likely to photograph the spectators than the event."Cafe Royal Books titled 'Oldham 1974–1988'
Paul added:"I like factories. In my early days I was sad to see so many of them being demolished when they once enabled so many Oldham to earn a wage. I hoped that one day these photos would be important to people and help them to remember days gone by."CommentsFebruary 1986. Demolition of mill chimney at Osram Duke Mill, Shaw, Oldham. The chimney was too close to the main building to drop so had to be demolished by hand over several days1980.
