There was anmirror purchased for my then-boyfriend’s flat in 2019. A longed-for green velvet sofa from Habitat in 2017. A pale pink chest of drawers, picked up in the Ikea sale for £25 when I first moved to London in 2010. I think that’s about the measure of it.
The curved-edge 1970s travertine coffee table in my living room – the low 1950s parlour chair covered loosely in rose-printed silk in my bedroom, which cost £40 cash at a second-hand shop up the road. The dinky, handmade chest of drawers with brass handles that I rescued from the communal bins on an estate I used to live on.
I’ve carried coffee tables home on the bus after dusting them down from the bins. I’ve pulled Parker Knoll chairs out of skips, and paid a small fortune to have them re-upholstered in lurid floral velvets. It doesn’t always work: a chipped Anglepoise lamp now lives under my stairs thanks to a threaded base screw and some busted screws, along with a brass lamp that nearly electrocuted me – mercifully, it just repeatedly blew the fuse box instead. Empty picture frames litter a cupboard filled with jobs to be done: I never get around to buying the glass to fit them, nor quite matching them up to the right-sized art. Some things are just too square a peg to fit into the round hole of my home.
