Yet to find a Japanese restaurant in Liverpool that has blown me away, I tried Hibiki on Renshaw Street.
Renshaw Street has become a hub for cuisine from around the world in recent years. From Indian to Japanese to - just about - Turkish, there is a wide variety to choose from, depending on your preference.
With the help of a jug of sake, we worked our way through a fairly extensive double-sided menu, with the whole back page dedicated to sushi. We ordered a goma wakame seaweed salad , chicken gyozas and takoyaki , a popular Japanese street food that is basically deep-fried balls of octopus meat. The tuna was moist and fresh tasting, lifted to a new level with soy sauce and wasabi. Our octopus was perfectly good but the seared eel won the battle of the nigiri, with a lovely charry taste. The salmon maki was fresh and sweet, again lifted by adding soy sauce and wasabi - like everything. Star of the show was the crab California rolls: there was so much going on, with the addition of crab tempura and crispy shallots, and the texture and flavour were both amazing.
