Author Peter James found himself on the dark web while researching a book – but he couldn't believe what he found when he started exploring.
I was startled to see just how user-friendly the interfaces were Shadowy figures. Buying drugs. Hiring a hitman. When many of us picture the dark web, these are just some of the illicit images that come to mind. And for 30 years, I’ve known first hand just how sinister the internet can be. In 1993, while researching for a novel, I became involved with an internet start-up company, one of the first in the UK.
What surprised me most was the sheer volume of questionable to downright nefarious services you could purchase or engage with From there, you are led to directories of links, split into different categories – there are some webchat forums, but the majority of the illegal content is on any one of a number of different online markets. These function in exactly the same way as sites like Amazon or eBay, with buyers and sellers even able to leave reviews.
