More than a decade on, embracing her wheelchair has irrevocably changed her life for the better, taking her everywhere from Cambridge University, where she read English Literature at Newnham College, to the decks of a tall ship that carried her 800 miles across the Atlantic.

They had everything: not just the high-end, lightweight day-chairs I was there to try, but racing chairs, basketball chairs, rugby chairs. There was an off-road chair with camouflage upholstery and tyres twice as thick as my arm, and other contraptions I didn’t even recognise. The staff there were fantastic: fun, sporty types. Many were wheelchair users themselves, skilled racers or wheelchair rugby players.
