The festive staple is available at a number of UK supermarkets at this time of year
At this time of year, things can start to get a little bit hectic. Christmas Day is less than two weeks away, which means there’s only so much time to get out and enjoy the festive season.
While the majority of the mulled wines are from the more premium ranges of the supermarkets above due to the availability of stock at the time of testing, there are some mid-point mulled wines and budget options too. For the taste test, each of the wines were judged on quality of the flavour, taking into account balance, aroma and finish.
Bottle Appearance As the adage goes, don’t judge a book by its cover. That said, we shop with our eyes first and some bottles just look the part - while others are a little lacklustre on the decorative features. A bit of sparkle never goes amiss at this time of year. To taste it was almost watery with no discernible flavour. It also lacked the body of a good red wine and didn't feel particularly festive. Tasting like something more akin to a cordial, it was a collective thumbs down from the group on this one. It was the cheapest of the bunch though. One of only two mulled wines within the group that’s marketed as a traditional-style Gluhwein, once warmed up it smelled like 'Christmas in a cup' according to my taste testers.
