'For years on New Year’s Eve I’d tell myself this would be the year I’d break my awful smoking habit'
If you’ve ever been a habitual smoker, you’ll be familiar with that feeling at two minutes to midnight, gathering your thoughts and hopes for the year ahead on New Year’s Eve – ‘This is the year I stop smoking’.
Little did I know that nearly 20 years down the line, this habit would still be with me, draining my bank account and making any perfume I bought smell awful, when mixed with my natural aroma of Holborn Yellow roll-ups. I never thought I’d stop smoking, ever. I remember doing a job interview, which involved doing a timed task. I made sure I left five minutes spare so I could nip out for a ciggy between the task and the next part of the interview process.
There is literally no reward to it. But I know that now, and these words are exactly the kind of thing that would make me snap at anyone judging me for my habit. I decided I needed time to process this and give myself time to stop smoking. Will-power alone, was never going to work for me and don’t even mention vaping – it’s just another habit. I’d heard a lot of people had had success by reading Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking and I decided that reading a book didn’t feel too radical for me to get the process rolling. Before I read it, I told myself I needed to approach it with a very open mind.
Low and behold, about half-way through the book, I couldn’t wait to finish it, so I could chuck my tobacco in the bin and never smoke again. That last day getting through the last chapters, almost built a rejection for smoking in me.
