This year, she's giving upRight now, you see, I have seven different events, including three Christmas fairs, a disco and two plays, coming up in the next month. With three children at three different schools, I need a PA just to keep on top of the emails.
Not volunteering for anything makes me feel like a shameful Scrooge and in years gone by, I always have done, but when you’re outnumbered by kids and multiple schools, the responsibilities and demands at this time of year can feel overwhelming. As I am also self-employed, time really is money, two things I am always short of in December.. You know, the one who volunteers to help out at the Christmas disco, make the homemade mince pies and offers to organise the teacher’s presents.
So this time I’m ignoring the deluge of WhatsApp messages and emails, buying the mince pies from Aldi and ordering the Christmas presents on Amazon. I won’t be spending hours making the mulled wine, inviting everyone over on Boxing Day or requesting a ruinously expensive turkey from the Farm Shop. I’ll be buying a chicken instead. No one will notice the difference anyway.so the children don’t feel left out on Christmas Jumper Day .
Instead, I’m going to focus on trying to get as much work done as possible, seeing friends I actually want to spend time with and, er, filing my tax return early. As if we needed any more reasons to hate January.
