“I think I’ll be the same. I’d like to be able to buy a villa in Tuscany and just eat cheese and drink wine all the time, but I don’t think I’d take much joy in it. I think my retirement will mean an easier pace of life, but with work still involved.”
Barney is “all for” the triple lock system but is wary of the cost. “Anything that can be done to improve our pensions so that it feels like a reward and not like we’ve lost out is a good thing,” he explains. “But there has to be a delicate dance of understanding the true cost of it. “I sincerely believe that pensioners should be looked after, and the current provision for them never seems consistent with the supposed wealth of our country,” he adds. “There needs to be some stability for pensioners going forward.”“I never thought the state pension would satisfy my needs,” he says. “I always had this thing in the back of my mind about being a poor pensioner.
