Four anglers, three from Nottingham, were fined over £600 for illegal fishing activities in Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire. The fines served as a deterrent against illegal fishing practices that undermine sustainable fishing efforts.

Four anglers, three from Nottingham, faced the consequences of their illegal fishing activities in Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire, receiving fines totaling over £600. Mariusz Wolanski, a 57-year-old resident of Hartley Road in Nottingham, was apprehended while fishing illegally with a keep net shorter than the legal 2-meter length in Attenborough. He was found guilty alongside three other anglers at Northampton Magistrates' Court on January 13, 2025.

Wolanski was ordered to pay a £146 fine, £135 in costs, and a £58 victim surcharge. Stuart Gotheridge, 31, from Henrietta Street in Nottingham, was also found guilty of fishing without a valid license at Beechwood Park, Elvaston, on July 3, 2024. His penalties included a £220 fine, £135 in costs, and an £88 victim surcharge. Zbigniew Malczak, of Hartley Road, Nottingham, admitted to using a keep net less than 2 meters in length and fishing without a license at Attenborough on July 28, 2024, while fishing on the River Trent. He was fined £146, ordered to pay £135 in costs, and a £58 victim surcharge. The fourth angler, Matthew Mee, 52, from Long Close in Loughborough, pleaded guilty to fishing without a license at Pride Lakes, Hemington, on July 3, 2024, and received a £146 fine, £135 in costs, and a £58 victim surcharge.A spokesperson for the Environment Agency emphasized the severity of illegal fishing, stating, 'We hope the penalties these illegal anglers have received will act as a deterrent to anyone who is thinking of breaking the laws we have in place across England.' They added that illegal fishing can lead to fines of up to £2,500 and the seizure of fishing equipment. The agency actively monitors rod licenses 24/7 to prevent illegal fishing and prosecutes offenders. The spokesperson further highlighted that illegal fishing undermines the Environment Agency's efforts to protect fish stocks and maintain sustainable fishing practices. Revenue generated from fishing license sales is directly invested in protecting and enhancing fish stocks and fisheries for the benefit of legal anglers.
