Shana Manradge, of Paterson, long dreamed of opening a market where people in her community — a known food desert — could buy fresh, healthy and affordable food. On Saturday, August 24, 2024, she finally made that dream come true., the Paterson entrepreneur’s dream of helping people in her community — a known food desert — access fresh, healthy and affordable food, seemed to elude her.
I had spoken to her too when Shana’s market was shut down and at the time she’d said she’d been left with “no option” but to travel to Fair Lawn in Bergen County to buy groceries. The city, she’d said,Paterson’s been identified as one of 50 food deserts in a statewide priority list developed by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority .
“Oh, it’s just so wonderful to see!,” Shanikwa Lemon, a Paterson resident and longtime community organizer who’s closely followed Shana’s journey, tells me. “You know, this market it’s not just a market ...it’s something the community sorely needed and deserved.” With the store now open, I wondered what ever happened to A Better Market “on wheels.” “Oh, I haven’t told you!” she says excitedly. “That’s happening, too!” “Oh, wow!,” I say. “God is good!” She smiles wide and replies “All the time!”
