In a new memoir, 'Barefoot Contessa' host Ina Garten says she was 'terrified' of her father.
Ina Garten has published dozens of books in her decades-long career as a celebrity cook, but her latest project is poised to be a bit of a bombshell. Dropping on October 1,is Garten's first-ever memoir, and it includes heartbreaking new details about surviving a childhood of abuse in Stamford, Connecticut.in an interview."It was the '50s: it was a different time. Garten, who was born in Brooklyn in 1948, described a "terrifying" domestic environment, where her father would have what she calls "temper tantrums," during which she feared for her life. Her mother, meanwhile, was "controlling," and "didn't know how to have relationships."the New Yorker . “He never sexually abused me, but he had this love-hate relationship with me. I think he loved me, but he wanted me to be who he wanted me to be, without any consciousness of who I am."When Garten married in 1968, however, things changed: she was free. She moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina with her new husband, Jeffrey, who did a four-year stint in the military during the Vietnam War. The couple later moved to Washington, D.
"I think if there's a threat of violence, you're always afraid," she said. "Even when it's not happening. So I basically spent my entire childhood in my bedroom with the door closed. It was protection. It was to keep myself safe.
