Argentina could become one of the leading copper producers in Latin America
, with five projects potentially coming online between 2027 and 2050, according to a report by Chile-based consulting group GEM Mining Consulting.The projects identified are El Pachón , Josemaría , Los Azules , MARA and Taca Taca . Report author Catalina López noted the average deposit grade in Argentina is 0.5% copper compared with 0.4% in Chile.
These include relief on export duties and early VAT refunds, similar to the RIGI regime for large investments.Infrastructure Another challenge will be developing infrastructure, including roads, power lines, renewable power sources and water supply, to support the sector.Delegates at the Sustainable Mining Summit in Mendoza, Argentina, heard that an infrastructure deficit needs to be overcome.
