No witnesses were called and the inquest relied solely on documents
A conclusion of 'suicide while undertaking a terror attack that murdered 22 innocent victims and injured many others' has been formerly recorded by a coroner who conducted a documentary inquest into the death of Manchester Arena bomber Salman Abedi.
He recorded a conclusion of 'suicide while undertaking a terror attack that murdered 22 innocent victims and injured many others'. In submissions, the Manchester Evening News asked for the inquest to be held with the media in attendance, arguing the fact evidence had already been heard did not mean that, in itself, an open hearing would not be in the public interest.
"Secondly, the coroner is aware that there is a risk by adducing, in public, detailed evidence about the circumstances of Salman Abedi's death of glorifying his act of terrorism. A number of CCTV images put together in a timeline by police were also included. Witness statements from crime scene examiners, disaster victim identification officers and other police officers were considered, together with the post-mortem examination results and reports by other forensic and toxicology experts.
The summary also revealed he had broken a bone in his right hand some time before his arrest in 2012 - evidence used as part of the identification process after a surgical impact he had fitted during subsequent surgery was found during the post-mortem. DNA samples also proved to be a match. A partially damaged bank card issued by Halifax in the name of Mr Salman R Abedi was located at the scene. On the night, he was wearing a long-sleeved black top, a black body-warmer and dark blue trousers.
"To formally record his death as simply 'suicide' and shorn of all reference to his murderous attack would fundamentally fail to record the true circumstances of his death and unjustly misrepresent and minimise the true impact of his mode of death," they said. "It is submitted that the only appropriate conclusion in this case is a narrative conclusion, whether alone or together with the short form of suicide.
