Reform will use its conference in Birmingham to widen its horizons after the general election

For weeks during the election campaign, the Reform UK leader had been taunting his Tory rivals, suggesting his nascent party could stage a reverse takeover of the country’s most successful political party. The party has become so confident about its prospects that there is even talk within its ranks that it no longer needs to rely on electoral reform to achieve its aims, and can legitimately challenge Labour, the Conservative and the Liberal Democrats in the current first past the post system.

“Take a look at the polls, but we are rising everywhere. And the people switching to us isn’t coming from the Tories, it’s coming from Labour,” a party source said. The issue of Net Zero will be another wedge that Reform will aim to hammer Labour on over the coming years, as it seeks to pick up voters who may be affected by the changes.

Polling this week by Opinium showed Reform was level with the Conservatives when it came to Scottish voting intention, in a sign that the party is gathering popularity north of the border. “I have had to spend a lot of time holding coffee meetings with constituents, explaining why it is we’re doing what we are doing and the mess we’ve been left, because I know I’ve got Reform over my shoulder,” one minister told

It is this spread in both geography and demographics that Reform lacks, and while it can appeal to a sizeable base of 4m voters, unless it can reach beyond its core vote the party will hit a natural ceiling.
