‘They are saving the pub trade' 🍻 Inside the history of desi pubs the ‘post-racist’ British-Indian institution that revitalised failing boozers

In Sanskrit, desi means land or country, and is sometimes used as a catch-all term for Indian Subcontinental. Desi pubs still exist today and continue to provide “safe spaces for brown people” to drink and eat, says Mr Jesudason, who is travelling across the UK for his guide. But rewind three decades and such a situation was unimaginable to Mr Jesudason as he recalls his first time in a pub in his hometown of Bedfordshire.“I was really nervous anyway, as anyone would be trying to blag their first drink when they’re underage. I was completely humiliated. But I kind of had this attitude of, ‘How dare you think every space is your space?'”
Mr Jesudason said: “I do agree that pubs are open forums, but I don’t agree in spouting racist, prejudice bile. Then I felt I hated the area when it’s just these three people in the pub.” Molly Davis, head of communications at the British Institute of Innkeeping , said: “Pubs play a central role at the heart of every community across the UK, offering safe spaces for people to connect and come together”.
