Diplomats scramble to contain crisis as Iran and allied militias vow revenge after assassinations

Ayatollah Khamenei vowed to inflict “severe punishment” on Israel after the assassination and the Iranian leader has since issued an order to strike Israel directly in response, Israel said it had confirmed the killing of another senior Hamas official, Mohammed Deif, head of the group’s military wing, in an air strike earlier this month.– was suspected of playing a central role in planning the 7 October attacks that killed about 1,200 Israelis.
