DUP rep accuses Sinn Féin of surveying streets until they 'get the result they want'
Another row over Irish language signage has erupted in Belfast Council after parties disagreed how to deal with street applications that go “back of queue” after passing the threshold but facing more responses in opposition.
The nationalist parties Sinn Féin and SDLP acceded to a DUP proposal to not include Wellington Park Terrace in that month’s tranche of streets to receive dual language street signs. However, at the full council meeting on Monday, Sinn Féin Councillor Conor McKay said: “I was approached by a number of constituents who were disappointed in the level of consultation they had on this.
The new policy means at least one resident of any Belfast street, or a councillor, is all that is required to trigger a consultation on a second nameplate, with 15 percent in favour being sufficient to erect the sign. Non-responses will no longer be counted as “against” votes, and there will be an equality assessment for each application.
Sinn Féin Councillor Ciaran Beattie said: “We need clarity on this, because what is “the back of the queue”? What happens when we get to the back of the queue?
