The rapid adoption of the AI chatbot has experts concerned that the internet will drown under a torrent of untrustworthy and low-quality content.

Across the CSIRO, there are more than 1000 people working with AI, but Australia’s national science organisation isn’t working directly with general-purpose AI tools such as ChatGPT. The boss of the CSIRO’s Data61 division, Jon Whittle says the hype around ChatGPT is obscuring the real potential of AI to solve the world’s largest problems.“They don’t want their platform and their reputation to be destroyed by a whole bunch of people putting up erroneous pieces of code,” Whittle says.
“ChatGPT is a pattern recognition system that cleverly exploits our evolved obsession with what comes next. It is so far from artificial general intelligence, but it does a remarkable imitation of it. “Actors like China are likely to leverage these kinds of capabilities to support the at-scale environment shaping activities that we know they already undertake,” he says.
But when you ask it to write an email persuading someone to open a link, it spits out an email with the subject line: “Urgent request to review important information.”
