'There are big misconceptions about what I do': The secret life of an urban explorer
Navigating the neglected hallways of an old hospital in Withington as a child is what initially sparked Matt's interest in exploring abandoned buildings. Aged just 11 and 'looking for something to do' with his cousin, the youngsters stumbled across a doorway to the unknown.
"There are big misconceptions about what I do," Matt tells the Manchester Evening News . "I am not trying to encourage people to put themselves in danger or take any risks. I am doing that on behalf of people, to give people an insight into the amazing history of some of these buildings that they see every day and don't think about.
His explorations have seen him climb onto abandoned buses, to churches, pubs, derelict water parks and even gain access to a closed-down swingers club... with many remnants left behind ... you can use your imagination on that one . The ground floor rooms on the north east front have been converted to a space for exhibitions and the site remains partly opened throughout the year for tours.
"People wonder what's inside and want to know about their interesting history, and with my following now, people love it and I sort of feel responsible in answering those questions.
