A few years ago, I spoke in a debate entitled “Parenting Doesn’t Matter – Or Not as Much as You Think”. I was invited because I’m a psychologist by training, and I have a particular interest in the nature vs nurture question: what makes people turn out the way they do? Well, that’s about to change. My wife is in the final days of her pregnancy, and by the time you read this we might already have our first baby . And despite arguing in the debate that parenting effects are overrated, I still feel pretty nervous about the whole thing. I thought I’d take this opportunity to re-assess the arguments. So: does parenting matter?Of course, it’s a very ambiguous question, since both “parenting” and “matter” can be defined in all sorts of ways.
