Those people who call north Manchester home have faced the reality of poverty and dwindling opportunity for years. This is a place where healthy life expectancy is below just 60-years-old. Where children expect to live five years less than those born in other parts of the country. “I have to use this place, it’s a disgrace.” “It’s an insult.” “Yes or no – will you fully fund North Manchester General’s rebuild as promised?” We made our demands – loud and clear. And on Monday, news broke that the long wait could finally be over.
A lack of single rooms means people who are dying have to do so on open wards, as the demand for isolated space for people who are infectious is so high. The plans talk about a wellbeing hub to deliver community-based care and support, a café, allotments, and a village green. Shops and offices were added in a move which would stimulate local business and jobs. The plans talk about hope.
