James Corden’s restaurant ban drama shows how keen the British public is to take him down ✒️ Esther Walker writes for ipaperviews
The same thing that tends to drive a person to be a global megastar and make millions is quite often the same thing that leads them to maybe be a bit snappy with waiting staff – the inside feeling that they are not quite enough. It’s called fixing inside problems with outside solutions. This sort of personality tends to look for confirmation in the world that their suspicion, that they are nothing special, is correct.
And that, they wrongly conclude, is the reason why there is a hair in their food or the waiter gave them home fries instead of a salad. It’s not, it’s because the waiter sees that the celebrity is inadequate and is therefore treating them with contempt. That’s quite a lot for a person to carry around. It’s no wonder that famous millionaires are prone to flipping out in restaurants, all of which are more than capable of accidentally treating diners like crap.
The important bit for me, though, is the resolution to all this. McNally chewed out Corden on Instagram, Corden apparently rang to apologise and McNally wrote in reply, “anyone magnanimous enough to apologise to a deadbeat layabout like me doesn’t deserve to be banned from anywhere. Especially Balthazar”.
An unreserved apology, followed swiftly by gracious forgiveness used to be how spats like this were resolved. The fact that it feels so unusual and refreshing is pretty damning evidence of what we have become.
