Top TV chef James Martin has bravely opened up about a health battle and how it impacts his career – as he said he can only present when he is allowed to cook and chat
James Martin , who has been a familiar face on our screens for nearly three decades and currently hosts his popular cooking show, James Martin 's Saturday Morning, opened up about the unseen challenges he faces behind the scenes. The star recently appeared on Kaye Adams' BBC Radio Scotland show to chat about his upcoming tour.
Kaye, reflecting on her time on his ITV show, confessed she was "fascinated" by his ability to cook while entertaining celebrity guests and other chefs, likening it to "a choreography." James responded with a laugh: "I'm watching you do your thing while I'm listening to music play and you're like a conductor. I can't do what you do and I certainly can't when I've been on Loose Women with you as well.
At the time, James informed his fans that he had to have surgery after being initially diagnosed in 2018, and then the cancer returned on "several occasions". He opened up about his condition, sharing: "On top of this I was then diagnosed with cancer on my face and I had to have surgery, which I couldn't do until two days before Christmas when we had finished filming. Since then it has returned on several occasions and I have to have regular treatments.
The TV chef - who went public with his new girlfriend Kim Johnson in April after ending his 12-year romance with ex Louise Davies - also said he followed a three-word mantra to help him through his shock cancer diagnosis and gruelling treatment, during a rare update on his health on ITV's Lorraine. He told how all was looking good in his recovery at the moment, and declared "onwards and upwards".
