Get your roses ready for a stunning bloom season in 2025 with expert pruning advice from Stina Hasan of The Hackney Gardener. Learn the ideal time to prune roses in London and other regions, and discover the simple steps for a healthy and vibrant rose bush.
As the new year unfolds, gardeners are eager to return to their beloved outdoor spaces, and for those with roses, there's a simple yet crucial task to kick off with to ensure a dazzling display in 2025. Stina Hasan, a seasoned gardener and the brains behind The Hackney Gardener, advises that January is the ideal time for pruning roses in London to eliminate frail stems, resulting in a stronger plant with larger blooms.
'To get good blooms this summer, you need to put in a little bit of work now,' she explained. 'January is the perfect time to prune roses here in London; if you live somewhere colder, you may need to wait until February or March.' However, she notes that gardeners in chillier regions like northern England, Northern Ireland, or Scotland might opt to postpone pruning until February, but cautions against waiting too long as tackling an overgrown rose bush becomes more challenging. Pruning roses is a swift and straightforward process, taking merely 10 to 15 minutes, and it sets your plant up for optimal health as the year begins. Stina said: 'Rose pruning is one of those jobs that can seem a bit intimidating but really it is quite straight forward and once you get used to the idea of cutting to improve the shape and vigour of the plant, it is quite enjoyable.' For those ready to prune their roses this January, be sure to have clean pruning shears, thick gloves, and either disinfectant spray or alcohol on hand for cleaning the shears, reports the Express. First and foremost, inspect your rose bush, singling out any branches that are dead, discoloured, or damaged and trim them away. It's crucial to eliminate not just unsightly branches but also any weak, thin growth, as this strategy encourages the roses to develop robustly. After all, if inferior stems stick around, roses would invest their energy in sustaining those weaker sections rather than channelling efforts into bloomin
