Jason Ryles has ended months of speculation he would become the new St George Illawarra Dragons coach with the shock call to join another rugby league team in 2024.

Assistant coach Ryan Carr has since stepped in for now, with a win and a loss to his name so far as the Dragons languish in last place halfway into the season.

He joined the Sydney Roosters as an assistant coach last year, 12 years after playing against the Dragons in the grand final which the tri-colours lost. Jason Ryles has rejected to return his former club St George Illawarra Dragons as head coach in favour of a move to Melbourne. Picture: Mark Evans/ News Corp Australia
