Passengers hoping to go on holiday hit by delays and cancellations after serious computer problems hit
Holidaymakers have been hit be delays and cancellations due to the global outage. Worldwide, more than 1,000 flights have been cancelled but by late morning some services were getting back to normal. Ryanair told travellers of ‘potential disruptions’ and told travellers to get to their airport at least three hours early.
Around the world airports reported problems with IT systems meaning delays at check in. Spain said that all airports were impacted, with Berlin saying people were struggling to check in. Jet2 said: “We are aware of a large-scale IT outage which is affecting computer systems. Whilst our systems are not directly affected, certain airports and some of our 3rd party suppliers across the network are.
A family from Bristol is stuck at Palma de Mallorca Airport after the IT outage caused delays at check-in desks. Jemma Wheeler, 30, says her family of five has been standing in the same queue for three hours. Ryanair warned of “potential disruptions across the network” due to a global third party system outage. On the airline’s website, it posted: “Potential disruptions across the network due to a global 3rd party system outage.
UK cabinet minister Pat McFadden says he is in “close contact” with teams coordinating a response through Cobra - a committee which handles matters of national emergency.Both German airline Lufthansa and SAS Airline, based in Scandinavia, are the latest airlines to report disruption. Lufthansa says that, at the moment, the company’s booking retrieval may be limited, but a solution is being worked on.
