.JodieHarsh reflects on breaking into the world of DJing and representing the LGBTQIA+ community in heteronormative spaces.
, at a time when LGBTQIA+ people weren’t represented in the media like they are today. Mothers with gay sons were still terrified their kid was going to die of AIDS after seeing it on the news two decades before. When I was caught out by a school teacher , grassed up to my family, and challenged by my dad over my sexuality, I had my new chosen family to lean on.
Fast forward a few years, and I’m living in London, dressing in drag and I’m about to start DJing. My chosen family is vast and creative and queer and unconventional, and social media begins to bring us even closer together on a global scale. I channel my love for music and club culture into a role I totally make up as I go along – a party promoter, a DJ, a producer and songwriter.
So here we are in the present day. Out of feeling like an outcast came a drive and determination to succeed. I knew I had stuff to do and something to contribute. I’ve got a successful career on the go, a record deal on a major label, and a touring schedule that would make most cabin crew exhausted. I’m booked for more straight festivals than I am Prides these days – in drag on main stage line-ups with the David Guettas of the world.
