Joe Brolly, known for his outspoken views on Gaelic football, is taking on a coaching role with Mayo senior club Knockmore. Brolly will serve as a 'head coach/selector' under Ray Dempsey, a former All-Ireland finalist who led Knockmore to back-to-back championships in 2020/21. This move comes after years of criticism aimed at Brolly for his critiques of Gaelic football management appointments, with many challenging him to get involved himself.
Joe Brolly is ready to put his words into action as he takes on a coaching role with top Mayo club, Knockmore . Brolly has often been challenged by critics in recent years, particularly when he criticised the appointments of Mickey Harte, Paddy Tally and Rory Gallagher, with many asking 'Why don't you get involved?
Aidan Kilcoyne and John Brogan took over from Dempsey for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Dempsey applied for the Mayo job in 2022 after James Horan resigned, but Kevin McStay got the nod. Brolly posted a picture on 'X' of a sheet listing McStay's 12-strong backroom team with the sarcastic question 'No gynaecologist?'
Despite their comprehensive setup, Knockmore were defeated in last year's Mayo final, losing 1-12 to 0-8 against Ballina. They currently hold third place on the Mayo roll of honour with 10 senior titles, trailing behind Ballina's 38 and Castlebar's 31.
