Joel Matip has served Liverpool well for seven years since his free transfer from Schalke 04 and may now be a wanted man
A rumoured 'plan' has emerged which could see Joel Matip leave Liverpool in order to sign a much-desired left-sided centre back before the transfer window shuts.
The captain will only be absent for one game as things stand, though the problem is only highlighted for all to see. Behind the two first-choice men there is Matip, 32, who started on Tyneside in Konate's place. In addition the Reds have Joe Gomez, 26, who was subbed on when Van Dijk got sent off, 18-year-old Jarrell Quansah, who came on with 13 minutes to go, and Nat Phillips, who was not involved at the weekend.
The senior options are strong and experienced though their injury troubles are starting to raise difficult questions, with Liverpool having kept tabs on potential centre-back options in recent months. The French publication claims that Matip would be Rennes' primary target to come in and replace the Belgium international, and while it would mean another senior member of the squad departing, perhaps the Cameroonian could be used as a bargaining chip to bring in younger cover?
