The SNP, which has consistently demanded a ceasefire in Gaza, was already in crisis after the External Affairs Secretary’s “secret meeting” with Daniela Grudsky.

First Minister John Swinney sent Angus Robertson to the controversial meeting with the Israeli deputy ambassador, the Sunday Mail can reveal.

“When people are committing regular atrocities no decent people, and certainly not elected representatives in Scotland, should be giving them any succour with meetings. “I would have liked to know this was going to happen as I’d have been outside St Andrew’s House along with others demonstrating against it.

The Sunday Mail understands that hundreds of SNP members have now ditched the party, with hundreds more threatening to cancel their direct debit. “At every stop where there were people meeting me… shocked at this apparent endorsement by the SNP.” She added: “I note you have supported AR but will also know of resignations from members in the party.

SNP Friends of Palestine, which is convened by ex-first minister Humza Yousaf’s wife Nadia El-Nakla, released a statement calling for an apology “and a guarantee, especially for our Palestinian citizens, that this normalisation of the state of Israel will not happen again”.
