I’D like to take this opportunity to wish all Glasgow Times readers a happy Christmas and a peaceful and fulfilling New Year and to thank all my constituents who’ve worked to make the Pollokshields ward better over the past year.
However, for some of Scotland’s most marginalised people – trans people – a ray of positivity emerged from the Scottish Parliament on December 22.This brings about small changes to the administrative process by which trans people can obtain a gender recognition certificate . A GRC is not some kind of all-encompassing gender passport. It impacts only the very small but nevertheless very important number of moments in life where a birth certificate is required as proof of identity. The rest of how we live our lives has always worked on the basis of self-identification and it always should.
The real-life experiences of trans people, and those close to them, were often ignored or excluded, at least until the final debate, which was uplifted by powerful speeches from women like Karen Adam, Maggie Chapman, and Pam Duncan-Glancy.
